When I Am Wrong: Step 10

When I Am Wrong:
Step 10 of Alcoholics Anonymous
Laurie Benson 2018

When I apologize
and it is sincere,
I feel like a snake
shedding its skin,
outgrown by a bit
and uncomfortable,
slippery and wet,
crawling,
wriggling toward freedom and then
it is done.

I dry off, look around,
check to make sure
I can move through
the world at this
new length and,
watch a replica
of myself;
see-through-and-
tissue-thin
blow
away.
